Using a Lidar-Based Height Variability Method for Recognizing and Analyzing Fault Displacement and Related Fossil Mass Movement in the Vipava Valley, SW Slovenia

The northern slopes of the Vipava Valley are defined by a thrust front Mesozoic carbonates over Tertiary flysch deposits. These characterized variety different surface forms, among which recent and fossil polygenetic landslides most prominent mass movements. We used height variability method as morphometric indicator, proved to be useful various methods for quantifying visualizing landslides. Height is based on difference in elevations derived from high-resolution lidar-derived DEM. Based geologic field mapping geomorphometric analysis, we distinguished two main types movements: structurally induced movement along fault zone movements caused complex Quaternary gravitational slope processes. pronounced element sliding huge rotational carbonate massif, was displaced partly older structures hinterland rock avalanches blocks. In addition material properties lithology, level roughness also depends depositional processes individual sedimentary bodies. were formed events intertwined geological past. bodies indicate large avalanches, while smaller gravity blocks translational–rotational slides breccia.
